Automod for Discord: filter messages before moderators have to
Kirzen checks every message against the rules you switch on and acts on the first one it breaks. You choose the action for each rule, from deleting the message to a ban.
What it catches
There are twelve rules. Each one starts off. When you switch one on it takes the default below, and you can change the action and the numbers.
| Rule | What it catches | Default |
|---|---|---|
| words | Words you have blocked | Delete the message |
| invites | Invite links to other servers | Delete the message |
| links | Any link at all | Delete the message |
| spam | Several messages in a few seconds | 6 messages in 8 seconds, then a timeout |
| duplicates | The same message posted again and again | 3 in 30 seconds, then delete |
| mentions | Mentioning many people at once | 6 or more, then delete |
| caps | Messages mostly in capitals | 75 percent, then delete |
| emoji | Walls of emoji | 12 or more, then delete |
| zalgo | Text broken with stacked combining characters | Delete the message |
| linkburst | Several links in a few seconds, however they are spread out | 3 in 20 seconds, then a timeout |
| domains | Sites on this server's blocked list | Delete the message |
| crosslink | Links shaped like a scam, judged on the address itself | A score of 55, then delete |
What happens next
Each rule can delete the message, delete and warn, delete and time out, delete and kick, or delete and ban. A message that breaks several rules is handled once, by the first rule it breaks, so one mistake is not punished three times.
For someone who keeps breaking rules there is an escalation. By default it starts after 4 violations within 120 seconds and ends in a timeout. You can set it from 2 to 20 violations, from 10 to 3600 seconds, and choose the action.
Who is left alone
Anyone with Manage Messages is always exempt, without being listed. You can also exempt a role, a channel or a member.
Try a message without acting
The test option checks a message against your rules and does nothing else, so you can see which rule would catch it and what the action would be.
What it does not do
- It starts off. Automod is off until you switch it on, and so is every rule. Switching automod on with no rule active filters nothing.
- It is a list, not a judge. Blocking a site also covers its subdomains, but a lookalike registered this morning is not on the list. That is the limit of any list kept by hand.
- Some rules overlap. The links rule already covers invites, so switching on invites as well is redundant. The command tells you.
- It does not promise to catch everything. It does what you configure. Check a few messages with the test option before you rely on a rule.
Questions
Does automod start on?
No. Automod starts off, and so does every rule until you switch it on.
Can I try a rule before it acts?
Yes. The test option checks a message against your rules and does nothing else.
Does automod filter my moderators?
No. Anyone with Manage Messages is always exempt. You can also exempt a role, a channel or a member.
Does it tell the member?
By default, yes. The status option shows whether that is on.
What happens when someone keeps breaking rules?
By default, after 4 violations within 120 seconds Kirzen escalates, with a timeout. You can change the number, the time and the action.
